Fungal nail infections

Fungal nail infections

Onychomycosis is caused by various types of fungi, including dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds.

It is more common in older adults and in people who have conditions such as diabetes, athlete's foot, or a weakened immune system. The infection can spread through direct contact with infected individuals or through exposure to contaminated objects like nail clippers or shower floors.

Symptoms of onychomycosis include thick, discolored, and brittle nails, separation of the nail from the nail bed, and foul odor.

Treatment for onychomycosis may include antifungal medication, topical treatments, and in severe cases, surgical removal of the infected nail. It is important to maintain good hygiene, keep the nails dry and clean, and wear proper footwear to prevent the spread of the infection.
